Determination of thickness of thin-film (mainly, not more than 10 μm thick) coatings applied using PVD and CVD processes.

The essence of the process

It is based on microscopic measurement of prints obtained with microabrasive wear in accordance with international standard EN 1071-2: 2002.

Equipment

A set of equipment for determination of wear parameters in a test for micro abrasion wear consists of Tribotester PC102 calorimeter (tribotester) with a set of balls, a microscope with digital eyepiece USB camera, computer, short-length reference gage, connecting wires, software and a method to determine thickness of the coating.

Designation

Determination of wear parameters of coatings (mainly, thickness from 1 to 10 μm, deposited using PVD and CVD processes) and substrate materials.

The essence of the process

Determination of wear parameters is based on microscopic measurement of the print obtained under conditions of microabrasive wear of flat samples, both manufactured without thin film coating, and with a coating applied on the substrate surface. Microabrasive wear is ensured with point contact of two conjugate bodies — a freely rotating steel ball and fixed flat specimen with abrasive suspension in friction zone. Wear conditions for the samples are unchanged at: constant type of the balls; power shaft rotation speed; test time; use of the same abrasive suspension and its amount.

The method for determining wear parameters of coatings complies with international standard EN 1071-6: 2007.
